The need to strengthen, support and stand by families in Boston is at an all time high. Women for Whittier is committed to advancing innovative ways to address and resolve issues related to women and children’s health.
Members of Women for Whittier provide support to programs at Whittier Street Health Center that are designed to improve disparities in health for women, children and families in Boston.
The initatives, supported by Women for Whittier, include:
The implementation of the Centering Pregnancy Program in Whittier's OB/GYN Department. The Centering Pregnancy Program utilizes a group model of care delivery and has been shown to improve pregnancy outcomes for at-risk populations. Within Whittier's community, rates of infant mortality, low-birthweights and pre-term births are very high.
Early intervention and screening services for developmental disabilities within Whittier's Pediatrics Department. Children within Whittier's community are at-risk for late stage diagnosis for developmental disabilities such as autism. This program supports parents access the services they need for their children to screen, diagnose and treat developmental disabilities.
The DecisionArts Program, which utilizes Arts Therapy to help girls who have been affected by violence. DecisionArts allows girls a healthy and productive outlet concerning violence they have faced in their lives, as well as other issues affecting teenage girls, such as self-esteem, peer pressures and sexual health.
Women for Whittier meets bi-annually to discuss these issues, as well as progress in addressing the health of women, children and families in Boston.
Our next event will be June 23, 2010, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston.
Women for Whittier seeks to reach 1,000 women in the Greater Boston area, who are commited to these causes. If you are interested in joining Women for Whittier please call (617) 989-3182.
